LAGOS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's anti-drug agency on Wednesday announced the seizure of over 1.9 million tablets of tramadol and codeine, two pharmaceutical products prohibited under Nigerian law, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the country's commercial hub.
Three people were arrested in connection with the seizure of drugs from Pakistan and the United Kingdom at the airport, said Femi Babafemi, a spokesman for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
He said three of the suspects were male, adding that the seizure occurred between March 10 and March 15.
Tramadol is a pharmaceutical product prohibited under Nigerian laws. Abuse of tramadol has dire health consequences for the population.
Already, Nigeria has banned the manufacture and importation of codeine. In May 2018, the ministry of health ordered the government agency that regulates food and drugs to stop importing codeine.
Nigeria's ports are one of the major routes through which contraband and other illegal materials enter Africa's most populous nation.
