A huge tower, which stands a staggering 3,280ft above the ground, is going to be opened by the end of the decade and will become the world’s tallest building once completed.

Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia is touted as the next Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which is currently the tallest building in the world. The construction cost of the tower is approximately £967million ($1.2billion).

Construction of the Jeddah Tower has officially resumed after a nearly seven-year hiatus. Originally planned for completion in 2020, work was halted in 2018 due to financial and political challenges.

The Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), led by billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has now restarted the project with a targeted completion date of 2028.

The Saudi Binladin Group remains the primary contractor, and approximately 63 of the planned 157 floors have already been completed.

Once finished, Jeddah Tower will surpass the Burj Khalifa by over 500 feet and will feature a luxury hotel, residential apartments, office spaces, and the world’s highest observation deck on the 157th floor.

The tower was designed by Adrian Smith, along with his firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG).

The design of the structure draws inspiration from the growth of palm fronds, symbolising new development in Saudi Arabia.

Smith and Gill told Architectural Digest: "The design for Jeddah Tower is rooted in the symbolism of Saudi Arabia while looking toward the future by being technologically expressive."

The infrastructure project is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which includes 15 ambitious initiatives aimed at transforming the country's landscape.

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 is a long-term strategic plan launched in 2016 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

It aims to reduce Saudi Arabia's dependence on oil, diversify the economy, and develop key sectors such as tourism, entertainment, technology, and renewable energy.

The mega projects under the plan include a £403billion futuristic city called NEOM, The Line, a zero-carbon smart city, the Red Sea project, and the Jeddah tower.
