GEORGE TOWN: A Harmony Walk that offered a chance for people to learn about other faiths drew the Penang Harmony Week to a close.

       The walk, organised by Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico), was the last event for Penang Harmony Week 2022.

       The walk gave visitors first-hand insight into places of worship along Penang's "street of harmony" or Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

       It started at St George's Church before heading to the Goddess of Mercy Temple on to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Masjid Lebuh Acheh and ending at Masjid Kapitan Keling.

       Student Nur Dian Seri Mohd Faizal, 25, said it was her first time visiting different places of worship.

       "I had no expectations but was surprised by the different cultures.

       "Visiting the Chinese temple made me realise many other cultures kneel down when praying as well.

       "Now I would like to visit a Siamese Temple, as the exterior looks beautiful," she said when met at Masjid Kapitan Keling here.

       Penang Social Development and Non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Chong Eng, who joined the walk said it was timely as Monday (March 21) is the International Day for the elimination of racial discrimination.

       "In 1979, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a programme of activities to be undertaken during the second half of decade for action to combat racism and racial discrimination," she said.

       Harmonico was established under the Penang Chief Minister Incorporated last year.

       This year's theme was "Fostering Harmony in Diversity" and activities held engaged the public through outdoor activities, arts, exhibitions, performances, and dialogue while promoting racial harmony.
