London crowds in Croydon exploded into cheers as Harry Kane bypassed Ukraine's goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan's defences. The England captain secured the advantage thanks to a seamless pass from Raheem Sterling. Superfans were caught erupting from their chairs to let out cheers of jubilations and launching their beer glasses into the air in celebrations for the first goal of the Euro2020 quarter-finals in Rome.

Some of the fans watching the game at a special fan zone set up at Croydon's Box Park could also be seen climbing up benches and tables as they got caught up in the euphoria.

The jubilant celebrations come as most England fans have been forbidden from travelling to Rome's Stadio Olimpico to watch the quarter-final match live because of current coronavirus restrictions on British travellers.

Kane's efforts to put England in the lead were later reinforced by Harry Maguire, who scored two minutes into the second half of England v Ukraine, before the Captain increased the lead to 3 less than two minutes later.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson further strengthened England's advantage 62 minutes into the match, scoring the fourth goal against Bushchan.

British citizens residing in Italy and tourists who have spent over 14 days in the European country are believed to make up the majority of the crown witnessing the match.

Despite the smaller-than-expected crowd of Three Lions fans, England supporters could be heard belting out the national anthem at considerable volume to show their support to the team.

England fan Dr Ellie Bond told PA minutes after Kane's goal: "When England scored we were so elated, we were hugging, it was so exciting.

"Everyone was just screaming, shouting and jumping and wanting to hug each other but we're all in our bubbles.

"We're just so thrilled. It's been such a strong start for England. We came down specially to watch the match."

Dr Bond's daughter Mo Mason-Jones added: "The atmosphere has been incredible with all the singing. It's coming home.

"We managed to get tickets but my dad and my brother didn't make it, so they're at home watching it on TV and we're here. We can't believe it.

"My mum was really worried about all the Covid things but being here it's been so well done and it's so well organised."

England fans also gathered in the fan zone in Trafalgar Square ahead of what they hope will be a night to remember for all the right reasons.

England will now face Denmark at Wembley on July 7, the first time England secured a spot in the semi-finals in 25 years.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson congratulated England on Twitter, writing: "An outstanding performance by @England tonight.

"We're all behind you for the semi-finals, bring it home."

Supporters in Leicester Square were in high spirits at the end of the match, singing and chanting that "it's coming home".

Trevor Harris told PA: "It's coming home. You can hear everyone chanting it. England is England and it's about time we actually started playing."

Keira Starr, 19, added: "I thought we'd lose, but now I actually think we'll be in the final."
