Traffic had built up after police attended the scene of three vehicles that crashed on the northbound carriageway of the M1. It is believed the vehicles were on the hard shoulder when emergency services arrived.
Traffic has now eased, and vehicles passing through as normal.
Officers were called to the incident just after 4pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The vehicles required recovery assistance to clear them from the area.
No serious injuries have been reported.
Reports say the traffic queues backed up from just before junction 5 to the crash site.
Traffic now looks to be easing as the delays clear.
This comes after another crash between junctions 4 and 5 of the M1 last week.
Again on the northbound carriageway, the collision took place between the Watford junction and junction 4 for Edgware.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Travel site Inrix says: "One lane closed and slow traffic due to accident on M32 Southbound from M4 J19 (Bristol) to J1 A4174 (Hambrook). Lane one (of three) is closed."
Delays persisted for a few minutes once the roads were cleared and reopened.
