‘Sir-Toff-a-lot! Jacob Rees-Mogg comes to blows with SNP MP over Nicola Sturgeon swipe

SNP's Pete Wishart attacked Jacob Rees-Mogg as the House of Commons entered recess to allow Labour and the Conservatives to attend their upcoming conferences. Mr Wishart said the timing was "nonsense" and lambasted Mr Rees-Mogg and his colleagues for not wearing masks in the chamber before branding him "Sir Toff-a-lot". After Mr Wishart unleashed a flurry of insults to the party opposite, Mr Rees-Mogg calmly dissected each point as backbenchers could be heard laughing at the exchange.

Labour will begin their party conference on September 25 with the Tories hosting theirs on October 3.

The House of Commons will be in recess until October 18 to allow both parties to attend and host their events.

But Mr Wishart was furious at the decision, stating the country will be entering an "autumn of discontent" as political parties go to "seaside resorts".

He said: "The UK is facing an autumn of discontent when hard-pressed families are facing one of the biggest assaults on their weekly incomes.

“As this House abandons its station to the conference halls and seaside resorts, there’s Universal Credit cuts, energy prices going through the roof, a CO2 crisis, driver shortages, farming chaos, fishing chaos, an export crisis, the ending of furlough and Brexit killing a nation.

“This nonsense of a conference recess has surely run its course and it must now come to an end."

He also took aim at Mr Rees-Mogg and said: "And I just hope Sir Toff-a-lot here manages to find a face mask on his way to Manchester [conference]."

Mr Wishart appeared to reference Mr Rees-Mogg branding Nicola Sturgeon as "Lady Moans-a-lot" during a session at the beginning of September.

The SNP spokesperson also thanked Speaker Lindsay Hoyle and jokingly wondered if he was going to a conference of speakers.

Mr Rees-Mogg took to the despatch box and said: "There was a Speakers' conference and an enormously successful one held at the G7... including very significant speakers including Nancy Pelosi from the United States.

"I think the honourable gentleman was intending to congratulate you on a successful conference that was held.

"Otherwise I am slightly puzzled by his geography because I was unaware Manchester was a seaside resort."

Mr Rees-Mogg also noted it was the anniversary of the Battle of Salamis, where outnumbered Greeks beat the Persian army, and sarcastically referenced Scottish independence.

The Commons leader then addressed Mr Wishart's complaints about wearing masks and pointed to the story of Ed Milliband of the "socialist party" who was seen not wearing a mask on the train.

The chamber laughed as Speaker Hoyle noted Mr Rees-Mogg was referring to Labour for the record.
