GOMBAK: There is no extraordinary traffic congestion at the Gombak toll plaza, police say.

       Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Zainal Mohamed Mohamed said traffic remains smooth both towards Bentong and towards Kuala Lumpur.

       "Contrary to certain reports that went viral on social media, there is no 'balik kampung' exodus happening that led to massive congestion near the Gombak toll plaza. Traffic remained smooth on Saturday (July 17) and so far today," he told reporters when met at the Gombak toll plaza on Sunday (July 18).

       ACP Zainal was commenting on viral news that there was a balik Kampung exodus that led to massive traffic congestion at the Gombak toll plaza.

       In fact, the traffic towards Bentong was minimal on Sunday while there was an increase of between 10% and 20% of vehicles heading to Kuala Lumpur, he added.

       "The increase in vehicles led to a minor traffic crawl of about 700m but it is largely due to stringent checks being conducted at the roadblock.

       "A majority of motorists have the necessary letters and documents to travel.

       "Only one RM1,500 compound notice was issued today as there was over capacity of people in a vehicle," be said.

       ACP Zainal said the police will not compromise in taking action against those while violates Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

       "If they failed to adhere to the SOP, we will issue compound notices and instruct them to turn back following inspections at the roadblock," he said.

       He also advised the public not to spread unverified news as it could cause unnecessary panic.

       "Always check the authenticity of any news. Always refer to the relevant authorities," he said.

       Gombak police will also step up efforts in enforcing the SOP during the coming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations, he said.

       "We hope the public can give their full cooperation by complying with the SOP. Our ultimate goal is to break the chain of infections," ACP Zainal said.
