Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is set to break a longstanding political tradition with her budget reveal.

Reeves, 45, is expected to reveal her autumn budget proposal tomorrow (Wednesday, October 30) and the Chancellor is expected to break a pledge by increasing taxes on 700,000 workers, according to an expert. Most of the contents of the budget are unknown, but it is believed she will swerve a long-standing despatch box tradition. The role of Chancellor offers the person in post a unique chance to speak to the House of Commons while having a drink of their choice. While most have opted for alcoholic beverages, water became the standard from 1997 - Gordon Brown's first speech as Chancellor.

It's reported that Reeves will continue to break the long-standing tradition, opting for water. This has surprised members of the public, who are glad to see the tradition put to bed, as they remember the drinks of preceding chancellors. The news has seen Twitter/X users fondly rememeber the chancellor choices before Reeves, though one stuck out in particular.

Sad news in today’s Sun that Reeves will not drink at the despatch box in her first Budget. Her predecessors enjoyed:

       ??????Goschen – port

       ?????? Gladstone – sherry & beaten egg

       ??????Churchill – brandy

       ??????Gaitskell – rum & orange

       ?????? Dalton – rum & milk

       ?????? Howe: G&T

       — James Heale (@JAHeale) October 27, 2024

The tweet, from Spectator Political Correspondent James Heale, reads: "Sad news in today's Sun that Reeves will not drink at the despatch box in her first Budget." He then revealed the tipples of choice from her predecessors, including one from Hugh Dalton, which has horrified members of the public.

While Winston Churchill swirled a brandy during his time as chancellor and Geoffrey Howe sipped at a gin and tonic, it seems Dalton's choice of rum and milk has not impressed people. The former chancellor of the exchequer under Clement Attlee's post-war Labour government in the 1940s drank a rum and milk mixture at the despatch box.

It is a drink mix which has rightly horrified members of the public, who went on to question how such a drink could be enjoyed. One wrote: "Surely the real story is who is drinking rum and milk voluntarily?"

A quote-tweet of Heale's post showed a person enjoying two rum and milk's, which were adorned with a lime slice. Another stunned user added: "rum and what?" One user joked: "I'd come out with a bottle of Buckfast." Another user wrote: "Low key be amazing if one walked out with a pint said, here's the budget and my 7th pint."

Others say their personal budget sessions with family members are often treated the same way. They joked: "I always have a strong tea (without sugar) when having to explain the household budget to the husband." Another joked: "Noticeable that Britain's economy has declined ever since the Chancellor started drinking water. Something to think about."

Some else joiked: "It is likely we'll all need a stiff drink afterwards." Meanwhile, another said: "This is more annoying than it should be."
