Over 83,000 traffic summonses issued by KL cops since July 3

       KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 83,152 summonses for various traffic offences were issued by police here since July 3 under the Respect Traffic Laws operation.

       City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said 65,924 summonses for traffic obstruction had been issued as of Wednesday (July 19).

       "Summonses were also issued for these offences: 3,655 for parking cars on pedestrian walkways and 3,082 to locals who were driving without a licence," he said when contacted on Thursday (July 20).

       ACP Sarifudin added that 160 vehicles were seized, comprising 153 motorcycles, six cars and a lorry.

       "We advise road users to not ignore road signs for the safety of all parties," he said.

       Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain had said that the operation was aimed at disciplining road users and at taking action on breaches of traffic laws.

       Among its areas of focus are obstructing traffic, running red lights and parking illegally.

       City police are also looking out for other offences, including fancy number plates and car tinting that does not follow regulations.
