KOTA KINABALU: A man could be facing the gallows or a lifetime behind bars after being charged with trafficking over 10kg of syabu.
Wong Shi Hong, 27, was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 at the Magistrate’s Court in Sandakan on Friday (July 14).
He was accused of the offence following the discovery of 10,049.9g of the substance in a car along KM68 of Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu in the Kinabatangan district at 11.45am on July 3.
However, no plea was recorded from Wong after the charge was read before Magistrate Muhammad Azam.
The charge provides for the death penalty or life in prison and caning, with a minimum of 15 strokes, upon conviction.
The court then fixed Aug 17 for next mention.
It also ruled for the accused to remain under remand as there is no provision for bail under the charge.

Anti-narcotics personnel from the Sabah and Kinabatangan police contingents had detained a man seen loading a box into a car at KM68 Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu on July 3.
It was later found that the box contained several packets of a crystalline substance believed to be syabu weighing some 10kg and worth RM600,000.
