TOKYO -- The operation of 161 Tokyu Railways Co. trains was suspended on Dec. 13 due to a rail track sinkhole in Yokohama, affecting some 64,000 people.
A railroad maintenance worker on patrol noticed the depression under rails about 170 meters away from Hiyoshi Station in Yokohama's Kohoku Ward on the Toyoko Line at around 2:45 p.m. on the day.
According to the train operator, the sinkhole under the railroad ties on the Toyoko Line's inbound line was about 50 centimeters in diameter and 50 to 100 centimeters deep. No injuries were confirmed. Train services were suspended between Musashi-Kosugi and Kikuna stations on the Toyoko Line and Musashi-Kosugi and Hiyoshi stations on the Meguro Line, but they were resumed by 5:40 p.m.
