Extinction Rebellion cause transport chaos as they march to COP26 - police blockade route

The climate change conference is taking place in the Scottish city for the next two weeks as world leaders and billionaires come together to sign agreements to tackle the climate crisis. But now, protesters have been blocked by police as they marched towards the M8 motorway.

Police stopped the protesters en route to the climate change conference.

Earlier today, the activists staged a "trillion-dollar bash" outside the office of JP Morgan in the city's financial district.

The area around the host venue, Glasgow's SEC, is classified as a United Nations "blue zone".

This classifies it as neutral territory while the UN will have its own armed personnel in the area.

A heavy police presence will surround the remaining area of the venue and city throughout the summit.

Earlier today, Greta Thunberg blasted the world leaders attending COP26 and insisted that change would not come from the lacklustre politicians at the summit but from individuals showing leadership.

Addressing the cheering crowd, she said: "Inside COP there are just politicians and people in power pretending to take our future seriously, pretending to take the present seriously of the people who are being affected already today by the climate crisis.

"Change is not going to come from inside there. That is not leadership - this is leadership.

"We're sick and tired of it and we're going to make the change whether they like it or not."

The counter-event comes after Mr Johnson was handed his first major victory as more than 100 world leaders commit to end and reverse deforestation by 2030.

Among the signatures will be Brazil, a country long criticised on the international stage for cutting down vast swathes of their rainforest.

Deforestation is a huge contributing factor to climate change because it destroys precious forests which absorb vast amounts of the warming gas CO2.

US President Joe Biden was forced to be evacuated from the climate change summit directly before delivering his speech on methane reduction.

Mr Biden was rushed from the meeting by his secret service detail after an alarm was sounded.

In one video on social media, large numbers of people can be seen being held back by security officials at the summit.

The President had been in a meeting room with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos before being escorted out.

John Glover from the Scottish Business Insider said: "Chaos at COP26. POTUS seems to have been evacuated after entering Methane Pledge.

"DiCaprio and what appears to be with Bezos are inside the room.

"Bull horn out telling crowds to disperse after crowds pushed through. Chaos."

It is unclear what caused the alarm to be sounded.

On Monday, the conference was branded an "international embarrassment" after it descended into "utter chaos" as security measures stall entry for thousands of visitors, a political commentator claimed.

Despite having 10,000 police officers at the event, Paul Waugh claimed entry had been an "international embarrassment".

He said: "Utter chaos at security for COP26.

"It's not as if they couldn't plan for this is it?

"It's an international embarrassment. All nationalities in this queue."
