GEORGE TOWN: The Penang branch of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized 75 “bubu naga” fish traps about 3.7 to 4.7 nautical miles west of Sungai Kerian here on Tuesday (Nov 16).
The agency's director Capt Abd Razak Mohamed (pic) said the traps were seized during a routine check under Op Pertiwi in Penang waters between 3.40pm and 6pm.
"Checks were conducted after receiving public complaints and the traps seized were then sent to the Batu Uban Jetty for further actions.
The use of “bubu naga” was prohibited as it could adversely affect other fishery resources due to its lengthy shape and the fact that it was made up of several fish traps that were not sustainable and could damage the ecosystem.
He said those who owned such traps could be charged under Section 11(3) (c) of the Fisheries Act 1985 with using such methods to catch fish.
"Those found committing the offence can be fined up to RM20,000 or face imprisonment up to two years or both.
"We urge fishermen to abide by the law and regulations.
"We will continue to monitor such activities from time to time and we hope the public can cooperate by reporting such suspicious activities.
The public can contact the MMEA at a 24-hour-online at MERS 999 or the Penang Maritime Operations Centre at 04-2626146.
