KUALA LUMPUR: Road users with existing warrant of arrests will be detained during Ops Selamat starting from Friday until May 8.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Razarudin Husain said those with arrest warrants would be brought in to the nearest police station while those with pending summonses would be required to settle the amount during the 10-day operation.
“We will use the ‘In-Car Radar’ along highways and main roads throughout the operation to enable patrol cars to detect any vehicle used in criminal activity or drivers who are wanted.
“The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) will also use the iCOPS system to detect traffic offenders with pending summonses and arrest warrants,” he said after launching Ops Selamat yesterday.
Held in conjunction with Hari Raya, Ops Selamat will focus on ensuring the safety of belongings and homes as well as reducing the number of house break-ins during the festive season, he said.
“The operation is also aimed at minimising the number of road accidents, especially fatal accidents,” he added.
All elements within the police force would be mobilised during the festive season, said Razarudin.
“We are focusing on total enforcement and we hope the public will adhere to traffic regulations for the safety of all road users,” he said.
Razarudin said the number of vehicles on the roads at any one time during the festive season could reach between two million and four million vehicles.
“We expect the number of vehicles to increase starting on Friday, with those going back to their hometowns.
“JSPT along with other relevant agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Fire and Rescue Department are ready for any eventuality to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
