London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has been accused of “gaslighting” after sharing statistics showing a fall in some crimes in the capital. The Labour politician posted a chart on social media highlighting knife crime, residential burglary, theft from the person and personal robbery had dropped by 19%, 10% and both 13% respectively in the first three months of the year, compared to last year.
“The latest figures show robbery, theft, residential burglary and knife crime are down in London, but there's still a long way to go before I’m satisfied,” he said in the post on X. “Backed with record funding from City Hall, the Met is putting high-visibility policing at the heart of fighting crime.” However, some people responded angrily after it was revealed the Mayor had missed out some worrying statistics that show some crimes in London continue to rise.

The figures, from a London Assembly committee meeting last month, were shared by Rory Geoghegan, founder of The Public Safety Foundation.
It showed offences such as gun crime, rape and shoplifting had increased by 18%, 9% and 38% respectively in the year to June 2025 when compared to the year before.
Theft from the person, which Sir Sadiq had earlier shared as being down, was listed as being up by 12%.
“For completeness, some crime figures the @MayorofLondon chose not to reveal - buried in a 100-page PDF,” said Mr Geoghegan as he shared the latest figures.
In response, one person accused the Mayor of “gaslighting and issuing propaganda”.
“It is sickening,” they said.
Another user said the Mayor was “utterly dishonest”.
A third person posted: “Decreasing crime levels from a lower base rate is worth hollering about but if it’s from a higher base rate…might be prudent to keep that as a low key success…and avoid being too self-congratulatory…especially when any crime decreases aren’t down to you personally.”
There has been growing concern over a crimewave in London.

Last week, purple lines with the warning “Mind the Grab” were marked on the city’s busy Oxford Street to help tackle phone theft which has become a well-documented and significant issue in London.
The campaign, supported by the Metropolitan Police, is being run by Currys and the University of London’s Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research, in an effort to raise awareness and cut down on the numbers of high street phone thefts.
According to research commissioned by Currys, theft hotspots in Westminster last year saw a mobile being stolen every 15 minutes.
