‘Typical sort of granny!’ Queen looked after royal piper's children when his wife was ill

Scott Methven spoke to People about how the Queen, 95, gracefully supported him during his wife’s tragic cancer diagnosis. His wife was diagnosed on their wedding anniversary in 2017 and died a year later.

He said: “Of course, she's Her Majesty the Queen, but to me she was the person who probably got me through this all the way along.”

Major Scott Methven served as the Queen's Royal Piper from 2015 to 2019.

Scott’s role included playing for the Queen before breakfast. During the Queen’s stay at Balmoral, the Queen has a bagpiper who plays for 15 minutes outside her window at 9am every morning.

The piper told People the Queen had a sense of humour and used a one-liner the first time they met.

He said: “She said, 'Do you know that you're the first piper to hold the post that I haven't had to look up to?' And then she just walked away!”

Scott said the Queen was a “typical sort of Granny”.

The piper’s children were left cared for by the royal family for a period of time whilst Scott was looking after his wife.

The family were also invited to spend time at Windsor by the Queen during his wife’s last few months.

He continued: “She just said she was really, really sorry and it was then all about 'How are the children now? Do they need anything?' All that sort of stuff. Just really caring again. A typical sort of granny.”

“I still get a wee message every now and then just to make sure that I'm okay,” he added.

“So even now they're still checking up on me and making sure I'm okay. It's very endearing really. I got a message last Sunday and it is really nice. All the way through this the Queen was absolutely fantastic.”

The Queen also refused to have her piper replaced whilst Scott was looking after his wife in hospital.

Scott told People: “The Queen refused. She said 'I've got one Queen's Piper. And the reason he isn't here is that he's away caring for his wife. So, you are not replacing him under any circumstances.

“He is not getting removed from his post because his wife is dying of cancer. That's not happening.

"To have someone of that position do that … she was just brilliant.”

During his four years as piper, he played at public and private occasions in front of royalty, heads of states and celebrities and maintained an endearing friendship with the monarch.
