All over-50s and the clinically vulnerable can now get the booster jab from six months after their second dose but the rise in cases comes as the Government campaigns for more older people to get the jabs and amid concern over low vaccine uptake among children.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain Dr Hilary Jones warned the latest numbers could take the country "back to square one".
Boris Johnson's spokesman claimed there are "currently" no plans to reintroduce restrictions but that the Government was keeping "a very close watch on the latest statistics" in a hint of a return to some lockdown rules.
Sajid Javid is expected to be quizzed on the spread of the virus, the NHS's winter preparedness, and the vaccine rollout.
