TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 41 coronavirus infections on Oct. 20, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced, the fourth day in a row it has seen under 50 cases.

The new cases came after the capital saw 36 cases on Oct. 19.

In the first week of October, Tokyo averaged 154.3 new infections per day. The figure dropped to 77.1 in the second week. The capital recorded 31,842 total coronavirus cases in September, for an average of 1,061.4 cases per day, down sharply from the 125,606 total infections -- an average of 4,051.8 cases per day -- tallied in August.

By Oct. 19, 3,108 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in Japan in the spring of 2020.

Tokyo has recorded 377,305 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Oct. 19, there were 309 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 26 with severe symptoms.
