PETALING JAYA: There are about 80,000 Covid-19 cases in the Greater Klang Valley undergoing self-isolation, says Dr Chong Chee Kheong.

The Greater Klang Valley Task Force chairman said half of the number monitored by the virtual Covid-19 assessment centre were asymptomatic in Category One, 30% with mild symptoms in Category Two while another 20% showed serious signs.

"The other 16,000 Covid-19 cases under home quarantine showed signs of deteriorating conditions," he told a press conference on Friday (Aug 13).

Dr Chong said the Greater Klang Valley area that covers Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan, recorded an average of 8,000 to 12,000 new cases on a daily basis over the past week.

Describing the situation as "worrying", Dr Chong said on average about 1% to 2% of the cases require treatments in hospitals or Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres.

He added that 200 to 300 additional beds must be prepared on a daily basis.

Dr Chong also said the Health Ministry has increased the bed capacity from 6,000 to 8,000 since the Greater Klang Valley Task Force was set up a month ago.

He said more beds would be added if the need arises.
