PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Electric Micromobility Industry Association (Memi) has proposed a meeting with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Transport Ministry over regulations concerning the use of micromobility vehicles.

       Its president Mike Lee said more understanding, communication and support from the people and authorities was needed to avoid misconceptions.

       "We hope to meet with the JPJ and the ministry to seek a win-win way forward for merchants, users and the authorities," he said at a press conference on Sunday (May 29).

       Lee said among the topics discussed with Memi members were micromobility vehicles as a mode of transport and regulations over its use.

       Memi deputy president Harry Wong said micromobility vehicles were more than just leisure equipment.

       Wong said there were generally four types of micromobility users - leisure, office workers, hobbyists and last-mile connection rentals - all with different needs and purposes.

       "Mopeds, ebikes, electric bicycles and scooters are used by the leisure group, whose main purpose is convenience and pleasure.

       "Office workers usually combine the use of electric bicycles, scooters or electric unicycles (EUC) with public transport such as trains or buses for work.

       "Hobbyists generally pursue freedom and fun with all safety equipment using moped, EUC and scooters," he said, adding that rental services like Beam and Tryke are generally found in urban areas with heavy traffic.

       He added that the JPJ had, on Wednesday (May 25), posted a video on its official TikTok account about micromobility vehicles that could be used, but no official announcement was made.

       "A discussion with the authorities is necessary for more insights into the rules and enforcement," he said.

       "We are happy to cooperate with the government for proper regulation and hope the government listens to the voices of market players and users.

       "We can work together to ensure safety and regulation while reducing carbon emissions," he added.

       Founded in April last year, Memi has over 50 merchants trading in various micromobility vehicles and supported by PEV (personal electric vehicle) Malaysia interest group members.
