GEORGE TOWN: Pedals have started rolling to break the Malaysia Book Of Records for Longest Non-Stop Spin Bike Relay at Hidayatul Islam Association on Jalan Kedah here.
A total of 25 members under the Central Muslim Society will take turns to ride continuously for 100 hours in an attempt to make it into the national record which will be announced on Sunday (March 27).
Event organising chairman Dastagir Mohd Yassin said each participant will ride for at least an hour before relaying to another.
"The team of cyclists are aged between 13 to 50 years old, with 15 men and 10 women to ensure equal participation of all.
"Two bicycles are used to ensure no pause during the relay.
"Each rider will need to maintain a speed of at least 20km/h to be eligible for the record feat," he said after launching the event on Wednesday (March 23).
The ride which started at 2pm on Wednesday (March 23) will end at 6pm on Sunday.
Dastagir said the participants have prepared for two years before deciding to attempt the record-breaking.
"This is the first time we are trying to create a record achievement and to encourage participation in indoor sports.
"In future, we plan to introduce workout sessions for more people to participate in," he said.
Among those who participated was 13-year-old Ahmed Irfan Ali, 13, who is the youngest, and 50-year-old Ahamed Basheer Sahul Hamid, who is the oldest.
Also present to officiate the event was Penang Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, who is Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) president, as well as Central Muslim Society chairman Mohd Hasan Othman.
