       Up to eight industrial bins are filled with perfectly edible provisions every day, a source says.

       Untouched snacks and drinks are taken from jets to Austrian contractor Do&Co’s HQ at Heathrow airport.

       Food waste from passenger meals should be binned under strict rules, with reusable items packaged for later flights.

       But one worker took pictures of what they called the “monstrous waste” of food.

       The whistleblower said: “It is appalling when some people are struggling for food that this can happen.

       "The waste is off the scale and really upsetting.”

       BA said it instructed caterers to recycle and reuse items where possible.

       But our source said: “The vast majority of the time we’re just told to bin everything.

       “Taking time to separate reusable food and drink at the end of a flight is seen as a waste of time and manpower.

       “I tried to point out the problem and how outrageous it is when some people go hungry. But no one wants to hear criticism.”

       Do&Co and BA said: “All airlines and suppliers are legally obliged to dispose of food brought back into the UK, so we’re encouraging customers to help us reduce waste by giving them the option to choose their meal ahead of their flight.

       “We’re also in regular dialogue with the Government to discuss ways to reduce the amount of waste they oblige us to dispose.”
