Former Commons Speaker John Bercow enraged Brexiteers by issuing rulings which appeared designed to help remainers. The former Tory MP quit as speaker in 2019 and joined Labour in 2021, but was suspended from that party over bullying allegations. Parliament’s Independent Expert Panel upheld findings that Bercow was a “serial liar” and a “serial bully”.
French politician Michel Barnier was the European Commission’s chief negotiator in Brexit talks. He once condemned former Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal, saying he was “strongly opposed”.
His career later blossomed and he became Prime Minister of France in September 2024. It didn’t last long and he was booted out of office in December after losing a motion of no confidence following a row over social security.

Martin Selmayr was Jean-Claude Juncker’s chief of staff and many thought he was quietly directing EU policy during the Brexit talks. Mr Juncker jokingly referred to his official by the nickname “the Monster.”
He has now been exiled to Rome as EU ambassador to the Vatican, Order of Malta and UN organizations.
Former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt was named the European Parliament’s representative on matters relating to Brexit in 2016 following the referendum. But he declared Brexit a “disaster” and as recently as 2023 backed a demonstration calling for the UK to return.
He remains a staunch critic of Brexit as well as of US President Donald Trump.
Jean-Claude Juncker, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, was president of the European Commission from 2014 to 2019. Under his watch the EU refused to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement after it was rejected by MPs, plunging British politics into crisis.
He no longer has an official role but remains an active commentator on EU affairs.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson declared that if she became Prime Minister in the 2019 general election she would cancel Brexit. Instead, she lost her seat.
Ex-Tory MP Anna Soubry became leader of the short-lived anti-Brexit party Change UK in 2019. She stood in the 2019 general election representing her new party but came third. She remains active on Twitter.
Sir Keir Starmer was Labour’s shadow Brexit Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, and convinced Mr Corbyn to agree to offer a promise a second Brexit referendum. He went on to become Labour leader in opposition and is now Prime Minister.
