App checks legitimacy of vaccine cert

PETALING JAYA: Doubtful if a vaccination certificate on MySejahtera is for real? Business owners can now use a verification app to check their customers’ vaccine certs.

Dubbed the Vaccine Certificate Verifier, the app is developed by the government and is available for download.

A check by The Star showed that the app mainly allows users to scan the QR code on a vaccination certificate to verify its legitimacy.

Once the app has identified a proper QR code, it will show the name and MyKad number of the recipient, followed by details of the vaccination: the date, location, vaccine manufacturer, batch number and the name of the medical officer who administered the jab.

This writer successfully used the app to verify her vaccination certificate. The app however prohibits screencaps. Each time an attempt is made, a message prompt appears stating screencaps are prohibited.

Since the QR code on the vaccination certificate is auto-refreshed at intervals, attempts to re-scan the picture of the QR code after more than half an hour, returns an “invalid code” message.

The app is only useful for verifying details on the vaccination certificate. It does not prevent people from stealing, duplicating or misusing others’ vaccination details.
