Labels should detail how far any food has travelled to shops, it says.
The NFU also wants promises Britain will not dip below producing 60 per cent of the food it eats.
And it is urging online supermarkets to introduce a “Buy British” option.
TV-star-turned-farmer Jeremy Clarkson, left, is also urging people to support the struggling industry.
He said: “I urge any Sun reader who sees the difference between cost and value to think, ‘All right, it’s 5p more to buy this meat with a red tractor on it, but I’m getting better food and helping British farming’.”
NFU president Minette Batters said the country’s self-sufficiency has dipped from 78 per cent in the mid-1980s.
But she added: “British farmers produce some of the best food in the world.”
