Harry and Meghan meet UN Secretary General ahead of Central Park 'virtue-signalling' event

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who quit royal duties last year, met UN Secretary General António Guterres on Saturday ahead of Global Citizen Live. Meghan looked chic in beige wide-legged trousers with a camel coat and stilettos, while Harry was smart in a suit.

The couple both wore black facemasks and carried folders as they arrived at the UN.

Harry and Meghan are taking part in Global Citizen Live later on Saturday urging leaders to adopt a vaccine equity policy to help end the Covid pandemic.

The couple will join the 24-hour broadcast being staged in New York's famous Central Park and around the world.

It will be part of a number of shows being held in cities from London to Lagos by the organisation Global Citizen.

Artists including Ed Sheeran, Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Metallica and Coldplay are scheduled to perform.

The Global Citizen Live campaign is calling on G7 countries and the European Union to share at least one billion Covid-19 vaccine doses with those most in need and support calls for a waiver on vaccine intellectual property rights.

It comes as royal commentator Jonathan Sacerdoti questioned how much impact Meghan and Harry’s involvement in the event would have.

He told Express.co.uk: “Now I may be too cynical - perhaps their celebrity status means that there are people who will be influenced by their persuasion to get the vaccine when they wouldn't have been before but I don't know anyone who that would apply to.

“I don’t really think any anti-vaxxers out there will be thinking ‘Well I wasn't going to get vaccinated but now these two millionaires who live in California have told me to and she used to be on Suits and he's part of the Royal Family of Great Britain, so I must go and do it if they've said so’.

“I don't really see that as being the most persuasive part of the campaign to get people to be vaccinated.”

He added: “This is a criticism, they keep coming in for so I think it would be smart for them to maybe choose some causes outside of that, a bit more and focus less on these sort of virtue-signalling causes.”

Harry and Meghan have had a busy couple of days as they tour the Big Apple.

The visit is the couple's first public appearance together since the birth of their daughter Lili in June, and their first major public trip post-Megxit.

On Thursday, the Sussexes stepped out at the city's One World Trade Centre, built on the site of the twin towers which were destroyed in the September 11 attacks.

They posed for the media at the top of the skyscraper against the panoramic backdrop, alongside New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor of New York State Kathy Hochul on Thursday morning.

Asked if she was enjoying her trip to New York, Meghan smiled and replied: "It's wonderful to be back, thank you."

The pair later met US ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

On Friday, they visited a school where Meghan read from her children's book The Bench.

The Sussexes met youngsters from the Harlem school to promote literacy.

Harry and Meghan quit royal duties in March 2020 for a new life in California.
