The huge gap between the tiny number of seats won by seats won by Reform UK and the millions of votes Nigel Farage’s party achieved has been laid bare by a revealing new graph.

The breakthrough by the party has been hailed as a massive achievement, going from nothing at the last election to taking four seats.

As well as Mr Farage’s victory in Clacton, Lee Anderson retained his seat in Ashfield – having been booted out of the Conservatives during the last parliament – while Richard Tice and Rupert Lowe also won seats.

But statistics show that under a proportional representation system of voting instead of first past the post, Reform would have stormed to 93 seats after winning a 14 percent share of the vote.

Mr Farage’s party also came second in 98 constituencies, showing that a much bigger haul of seats was within grasp.

Now, a graph by the Electoral Reform Society has revealed the scale of the disparity between votes and seats.

It shows how many votes each party got across the country per seat it won – and the result is striking.

Reform is way ahead of other parties, achieving a million votes per seat it achieved. The Green Party also got moe than 400,000 votes per seat.

Labour, by contrast, scored well under 100,000 votes per seat it achieved.

Naturally, a party winning hundreds of seats would have a lower score – but many have criticised the scale of the disparity.

Next to the graph on its website, the Electoral Reform Society explained: “Votes cast for a candidate that didn’t win end up making no difference in Westminster, added up across the whole country it means that millions of voters aren’t represented in Westminster.

“Parties can build up high levels of support across the country, but still fail to win the representation they deserve in Westminster.

“Some parties on the right of the chart only stand candidates in parts of the UK so have fewer voters overall, but as they tend to be concentrated in a smaller number of seats, they have enough support to elect MPs.

“In Westminster’s first past the post system it can matter more where your MPs are, than how many votes you have.”

In a disastrous night for the Conservatives, Reform UK appeared to take a large share of the centre-Right vote, as well as burrowing into Labour support.

Despite its lower vote share, the Liberal Democrats won 71 seats compared with Reform’s four.

At a press conference on Friday, Mr Farage blasted the current electoral system as “not fit for purpose”.
