As many as five police cars, two ambulances and three fire engines have dashed to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Llangollen, near Wrexham.

They were called by a worried member of the public who had spotted a man struggling in the water at the huge aqueduct, which carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee. It's unclear exactly which waterway the man is in.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today, 1 July, at approximately 8:31 am to reports of an incident in the Llangollen canal area of Pontcysyllte.

"We responded with two emergency ambulances, one rapid response vehicle and were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service.”

A mountain rescue team is also thought to be present.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "Officers are currently dealing with an ongoing concern for safety incident at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct , in conjunction with colleagues from WAST and NWFRS, who are also in attendance."

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 8:44hrs this morning to Llangollen near the Aqueduct where a man is in the water – police, ambulance and mountain rescue are also present. The incident is ongoing."

The aqueduct, which has 18 spans, took 10 years to build and was eventually opened in 1805. It's now a Grade 1 listed structure.
