TOKYO -- Japanese first-time Olympian Shori Hamada, 30, defeated French judoka Madeleine Malonga to win the gold medal in the final of the women's 78-kilogram judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics on July 29.

Hamada's win at the Nippon Budokan arena marked the first Olympic medal for Japan in the weight class since the Athens Games in 2004, when Noriko Anno clinched gold. It was also the first time for Japan to win three gold medals in women's judo since the Athens Games.
