PETALING JAYA: Chinese groups are lauding the decision by the government to relax restrictions in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) president Tan Sri TC Goh welcomed the latest standard operating procedure and called on those intending to organise open houses to convert them into a reception with attendance by invitation only.

“In line with the government’s announcement, we intend to organise a reception with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as our guest of honour, along with leaders and representatives from the Chinese community,” he said.

Goh added that he was grateful for the decision by the government to adopt a significantly relaxed SOP compared to the previous year.

“This allows the Chinese community to partake in the celebration while also abiding by the Covid-19 preventive measures implemented by the government,” he said.

Goh also expressed gratitude at the government’s decision to allow lion and dragon dances for the celebration this year, and hoped the respective communities would abide by the SOP.

“I also advise the Chinese community to give their full cooperation to the SOP released by the government as part of a cohesive effort to combat the pandemic,” he added.

Similarly, Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society honourable secretary Choong Yit Chuan commended the SOP.

“We the Chinese should view the restrictions set in place with an open mind and understand that they are there to protect our loved ones and the community against Covid-19.

“Everyone should continue staying vigilant at all times, especially now that there is a surge in cases involving the Omicron variant.”
