KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained the founder of a welfare home over the investigation into the alleged abuse of a teenager with Down Syndrome.

       Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan said the 29-year-old woman was picked up at her home in Wangsa Maju at 10.36am on Thursday (July 15).

       "We applied for a remand and it was rejected by the courts on Friday.

       "However, we will record her statement before releasing her on police bail," he said when contacted on Friday (July 16).

       Investigations into the case began on June 24 after Kuala Lumpur police received a report on the alleged abuse incident.

       Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Saiful Annuar Yusoff had said that the victim was found with burn marks on her chest, hand, neck and thighs, as well as other injuries.

       Investigations showed that six more children stayed at the condominium unit where the victim resided. However, no injuries were reportedly found on the other children.

       Comm Abd Jalil said they opened another investigation paper under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Care Centre Act 1953.

       "We subsequently detained her and requested for remand, but it was rejected," he added.

       The case has since garnered attention as the welfare home was also connected to a social activist.
