JOHOR BARU: Police here have confiscated close to 900 pairs of shoes in connection with the logo that appeared to resemble the word "Allah" in Arabic.

Johor police chief Comm M. Kumar said the shoes were confiscated during a statewide operation on Sunday (April 7).

“So far for Johor, we have received two police reports regarding this case; during the operation yesterday, we confiscated 892 pairs of shoes related to this issue.

“We decided to confiscate the shoes from 10 outlets statewide first so that there would be no further sale of the said items,” he said during a press conference at the Johor police headquarters here on Monday (April 8).

Comm Kumar added that he hoped the public would remain calm and let the authorities complete the investigation on this matter.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was reported as saying that a total of 1,145 pairs of shoes were seized in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Kedah. There have been no arrests made.

He added that the police will be working together with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) on the matter to determine if the logo was following the shape of the shoe or was khat (Jawi calligraphy) Allah.
