Environment Canada has issued special air quality advisories for southern Ontario and some regions of southern Quebec due to smoke which it says has blown in from wildfires burning in Ontario’s northwest.

The advisories were issued late Monday afternoon and include the cities of Toronto and Ottawa, and they warn that smoke is causing poor air quality and is reducing visibility.

The advisories for southern Ontario further warn that high levels of air pollution due to smoke are possible.

A smog warning due to the fires was also issued Monday afternoon for Montreal.

Environment Canada says conditions are expected to improve Tuesday with the passage of a cold front.

It says people may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath.
