The environmental prize, which is in its second year, offers ￡1 million to the inventors of pioneering technology that can be used to save the planet. There was concern last year that the prize was too male dominated.

       Only four out of the 15 projects were led by women.

       As a spokesman for the prize indicated, this year they are looking for something different.

       He said: “The prize…will also prioritise indigenous, and women-led solutions, Web3.0 enabled solutions, nominations that unlock new financial models which value nature, and finally, wild cards - the out-of-the-box, blue sky solutions that have transformative impact potential.”

       This year the Earthshot Prize organisers have also said they are looking for projects that will focus on key “tipping points” for the planet.

       Organisers have also expressed interest in initiatives which “extend the life of fashion, food and plastic products”.

       Solutions will further be sought to develop more eco-friendly transport.

       Regenerative agriculture and future-fit buildings are also key themes this year.

       The Duke set up the environmental initiative to find solutions to repair and protect the planet.

       It will award ￡50 million in prizes over 10 years.

       According to the Duke the winners of 2021 had "set the bar incredibly high".

       However, he emphasised that he was very much looking forward to this year’s competition.

       He said: “As the nominations for 2022 open, I can't wait to see what solutions the prize helps to champion this coming year.
