Kuku Machhal groped two women in the sea in separate attacks at Bournemouth beach last year. For this, he was sentenced to 18 months’ in jail.

He has also been placed on the sex offender’s register for five years.

Both attacks took place at the beach on July 23, 2021.

His friends are said to have cheered and laughed about what had happened.

Judge David Melville QC, on the other hand, found no reason for joviality.

He described Machhal’s actions as “intimidating” and “degrading”.

He added that both victims were vulnerable because they were in the water.

Machhal attempted to use this fact to his defence.

Judith Constable of the prosecution, said Machhal accepted that he touched the first victim but he claimed there had been a “strong current which brushed him into her”.

He also denied doing anything wrong to the second victim.

But after initially denying both allegations, he changed his plea to guilty.

       Machhal is 31 years old.

He arrived illegally in the UK from India in 2015.

Both of his victims reported the attacks to the authorities and Machhal was stopped from leaving the beach by security staff until the police arrived, the court heard.

Lesley Manley of the defence claimed Machhal was sorry for what he had done.

She said: “On that day, Mr Machhal did not go there with any premeditated intention to do harm but obviously his behaviour was not what one would expect.

“Nothing like this has happened before and it is extremely unlikely, I submit, that this behaviour would ever be repeated.”

But Judge Melville took another view.

He told the court: “There was a degree of planning and you did of course have your friends with you as well.

“I do no accept that you are remorseful. When interviewed you accepted no personal responsibility at all.”

Machhal, in the UK illegally, faces deportation, according to his defence.
