JOHOR BARU: Torrential rainfall in the last 24 hours has led to widespread flooding in at least five states in the peninsula.
Fire and Rescue department assistant director-general (operations) Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said that among the states affected were Selangor, Melaka, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
"In the last 24 hours, we have had at least two deaths. One in Pahang and another in Terengganu," he said in an interview.
He added that so far, there were evacuations being carried out in other states.
He said that Klang and parts of Selangor were the worst hit with more than 1,000 people evacuated within the last 24 hours.
"For Klang, the worst is still not over as besides the downpour, the high tide also caused widespread flooding," he said, adding that the worst hit areas include Kapar, Meru, Telok Panglima and Banting.
He added that the same situation also occurred in Masjid Tanah in Melaka.
He advised the public, especially in low lying areas, to get their documents ready, and prepared to be evacuated as the next 24 hours would be crucial.
"Even one of our fire engines was totally submerged in flood waters. Luckily, there are no injuries among our personnel involved in rescue operations nationwide," he added.
Flooding is also reported in parts of Negeri Sembilan.
