The death is being treated as "unexplained" by police, who have sealed off the woods near North Sands cove in Salcombe, Devon. The fire and ambulance service have both assisted with the investigation after the body was found on Sunday.

A source confirmed the remains were found without a head, Devon Live reports.

Police have confirmed that the body has been identified as 67-year-old Mee Chong who was reported missing on Friday June 11 from Wembley in London.

The disappearance of Mee Kuen Chong prompted a social media response from people concerned for her welfare.

Two weeks after the initial police post, Harrow police shared a fresh appeal on June 24, posting: "Police need your help to find 67 year old Mee Chong who is #missing from her home in Wembley."

Before the body was identified, a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Enquiries remain ongoing into an unexplained death after a body was found in a wooded area near Bennett Road, Salcombe, on Sunday June 27.

“A number of enquiries will be carried out in Salcombe over the coming days, and it is likely that the local community will continue to see a high level of police activity.

“We thank them for their support and if anyone has any information please email 101@dc.police.uk or call 101, quoting reference number 0700 of Sunday 27 June.”

Photos show the woodland, usually popular with dog walkers, is sealed off three days after the gruesome discovery.

A Special Ops tent has been erected as forensic officers carry out work.

It is expected the large operation will continue for some days in the tourist town.
