The Duchess of Cornwall is set to show off the "secrets of Windsor Castle" in a new Instagram media video series - with no white gloves in sight.

       Camilla will present historic treasures in a series of social media instalments through next year to highlight the “most remarkable objects” at the royal residence, it has been announced.

       A promotional video for the Duchess' series, posted on Instagram, shows her examining a 580-year-old book up close, without the white protective gloves often seen when antiques are handled on screen.

       But the Duchess' choice of attire is in keeping with recent changes in the approach of archivists and historians.

       An online statement announcing the projects stated: “Wondering about white gloves? Many scholars and academics now consider clean hands best when handling precious books, as cloth or latex gloves can make the wearer clumsy.”

       The announcement added: “We are thrilled to share with all our Reading Room followers the first instalment of our series Treasures from Windsor Castle, which over the coming year will explore some of the most remarkable objects held at Windsor Castle Library.

       Duchess of Cornwall delves into book archive

       Eschewing the white gloves, the Duchess delves into the archive of antique books in the Windsor Castle Library under the care of Dr Stella Panayotova, the Royal Librarian.

       Camilla examines a nativity scene in the 15th century The Sobieski Hours kept at Windsor, describing the imagery as “absolutely beautiful” and marvelling at the “attention to detail” displayed in the religious volume which renders the Christmas story “so exquisitely”.

       In the video, Dr Panayotova explained that the personal prayer book was expertly bound and illuminated in Paris, saying that it represents the “final most exuberant stage of manuscript production”.

       The first instalment of the video series was posted on the Duchess of Cornwall’s Instagram account The Reading Room, which will host the Secrets of Windsor Castle series over the next year.

       The Duchess’ love of literature and support for literary charities are widely known, and she has frequently presented the annual Booker Prize.
