GEORGE TOWN: Two men were killed in a collision between a lorry and a trailer on the island-bound lane of the Penang Bridge in the early hours.

       According to a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, a 39-year-old lorry driver and his 19-year-old co-driver were killed on the spot during the 5am incident yesterday.

       The 54-year-old driver of the trailer was uninjured.

       “We received a distress call from the public at 5.17am and a team from the Jalan Perak fire station rushed to the scene,” he said in a statement.

       The spokesman said the victims were trapped in their vehicle after crashing into the trailer from behind.

       “The first victim was extricated at about 5.55am, followed by the second man seven minutes later,” he said.

       He added that both men suffered serious injuries and were declared dead at the scene.
