A MUM who tried to drown her two-year-old son in the bath claimed it was just "five seconds of parental failure."

       The young mum was struggling with her mental health at the time, a court was told.

       She pleaded guilty to one count of reckless conduct endangering life and appeared for a pre-sentence hearing via video link in the Supreme Court of Victoria, reports news.com.au.

       "In a nutshell, this was not more than five seconds of parental failure," defence lawyer Felicity Gerry QC said.

       The incident took place in July 2020, when the young mum was bathing her two children.

       She suddenly grabbed the little boy's head and held him underwater for five seconds, the court was told.

       She then took him out of the bath and the boy survived and was not injured.

       The following day she searched "child protection after hours" on Google and contacted child protection services.

       The services alerted police who visited her home where she confessed what she had done.

       Ms Gerry argued it was not alleged to be an attempted murder but endangerment before adding that the woman had contacted the authorities herself and had been the victim of family violence

       She said: "She should not be labelled a bad mother, she is a loving mother who is unwell."

       She added that the 23-year-old "has suffered enough punishment" as she spent 251 days behind bars, has significant home insecurity and lost the full-time care of her children.

       The woman will be sentenced at a later date.
