A 72-YEAR-OLD man was traumatised after his stepson assaulted him for not giving him money to buy drugs.

He suffered injuries to his ear, hand and ribs after being beaten and kicked by the 29-year-old.

A video recording of the attack, which occurred outside the elderly man’s house in Yan, Kedah, went viral on social media.

Speaking to Harian Metro, the victim said: “Until now, I am still traumatised by the assault. I’m afraid that my stepson may seek revenge when he comes back.”

He said he hopes that the suspect, who is currently under police remand, would be detained for a long period.

“Recently, there have been incidents involving drug addicts who would even kill their own parents,” he added.

His 66-year-old wife said the younger man, who has a mental disability, had attacked his stepfather for refusing to give him money.

The suspect, she said, carried a Persons with Disability (OKU) card.

“He would come home and I would give him some food. He always asks for money. Sometimes he would ask for RM50. But when my husband only wanted to give him RM10, he became angry.

“Despite what he did, he is still my son. I hope he will be put behind bars and be given treatment for his condition,” she added.

       > Following the government’s announcement that there will be no movement restrictions during the Hari Raya festive season, many have started making preparations for the occasion, Kosmo! reported.

Flight attendant Siti Zulaika Zainal Abidin, 29, said she had ordered new clothes for her family to liven up the celebration this year.

“It has been our family tradition to get our Raya attire tailored.

“Last year, I only ordered one set of clothing because of the lockdown. This year, I have already ordered three sets each for my husband and two children.”

She said she feels it would be all right to spend more for this year’s Hari Raya as they had not been able to celebrate “normally” for the past two years.

Checks by Kosmo! found that the cost to tailor a baju Melayu or baju kurung is more expensive compared to previous years.

Most tailors and clothing stores attributed the high prices to escalating operating costs.

Noor Izani Suzana Ishak, 25, had to pay RM200 for a pair of baju Melayu with buttons from a tailor she has regularly patronised in Kuala Lumpur.

“It does feel a bit expensive. The last time I ordered a shirt at the store was in 2019 and the price at that time was around RM130 to RM170.

“But I have no choice. Most tailors have closed orders for Hari Raya clothing due to high demand,” she said.
