BEIJING (Kyodo) -- Japan's Mai Mihara claimed the women's title at the Asian Open Trophy on Friday, when she overtook compatriot and overnight leader Kaori Sakamoto in the free skate.
In a program with few mistakes, Mihara scored 135.75 points at Capital Indoor Stadium for a total of 203.58 in the test event for February's Beijing Winter Games. Sakamoto, who led after the short skate, had issues with her jumps and finished second with 202.28.
Japan's 18-year-old world silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama leads the men's event after Thursday's short program, followed by 17-year-old Shun Sato.
The tournament is being held without spectators, with the skaters and staff kept in a bubble as a coronavirus countermeasure.
