TOKYO -- Japan's capital reported 5,094 coronavirus infections on Aug. 14, exceeding 5,000 new infections for two days in a row.
Tokyo registered a record 5,773 new infections on Aug. 13. The capital remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when it registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 13, a total of 2,332 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 274,837 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 13, there were 3,727 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 227 with severe symptoms.
