The 2020 primary season kicked off Monday with the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.
But it took a day to get any results.
Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price blamed the delay on a "coding error" with the app they planned to use to report the numbers. He apologized and called the delay "unacceptable."
With 97% of precincts reporting, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has a narrow lead with 26.2% of state delegate equivalents. US Sen. Bernie Sanders is in second with 26.1%. US Sen. Elizabeth Warren is third with 18.2%, former Vice President Joe Biden is fourth with 15.8% and US Sen. Amy Klobuchar is fifth with 12.2%.
The winner of the Iowa caucuses has frequently gone on to be the Democratic nominee. In seven of the last nine competitive Democratic primaries, the candidate who placed first in Iowa eventually became the nominee.
