Man represented at murder trial by his brother is convicted in fatal beating on CTA platform

A Cook County jury has again convicted Anthony Jackson of first-degree murder in the gruesome 2013 beating of a stranger on a Green Line platform.

Jurors deliberated for about an hour and a half Thursday afternoon after hearing three days of testimony.

Jurors this week repeatedly viewed CTA surveillance footage of Jackson hauling off to punch and kick Sanchez Mixon, a total stranger, on the 43rd Street Green Line platform. He even stomped on Mixon’s head so hard it left a foot-shaped mark, prosecutors said. His death was ruled a homicide due to blunt force injury to the head.

In an unusual move, Jackson was represented by his brother, formal federal prosecutor George Jackson III. His main argument focused on allegations that Mixon was staring down Anthony Jackson on the platform that day, and had walked up next to him in a threatening way, leaving Anthony little choice but to defend himself.

But even if Mixon was staring him down, that doesn’t justify a fatal beating, prosecutors said.

Jackson had been convicted of the murder at his first trial in 2015. His brother got that verdict thrown out on the grounds that one of his previous attorneys was ineffective.

After the verdict came down Thursday, George Jackson withdrew from the case, and briefly bent down his head to rest on the defense table. Judge Ursula Walowski said she would appoint the Cook County public defender’s office to represent his brother.

Since the first conviction was overturned, the case got remarkably more strange, the Tribune has reported. For a time, George Jackson was removed from representing his brother altogether and, separately, banned from entering the courthouse.

He sometimes has failed to show up in court for trial dates. And he filed a slew of strange paperwork, some of it strangely sexual and racially fraught, that got him held in contempt of court over the years.
