A situation in Niles involving a man armed with a knife who refused to leave his home ended peacefully following successful negotiations with police and a department social worker, authorities said.

Niles police officers were called to a home on the 7000 block of Franks Avenue shortly before 9 a.m., June 30 for a report of a man who had threatened to harm himself, police said in a news release.

According to police, the man communicated his intentions to a friend, who contacted police. When police arrived at the home, the man was in possession of a knife and refused to exit the house, police said.

Another person who was inside the home at the time was able to leave safely, police said.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Zakula said the 37-year-old man made statements threatening to harm himself, but did not threaten any officers.

A police department social worker was called to the scene to try and get the man to leave the home safely, but police said he continued to refuse. The department reached out for assistance from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), a multi-department tactical unit trained in hostage and barricade situations, and additional officers and negotiators arrived at the scene.

Working with a negotiator, police were able to get the man to exit the home about three hours after officers were initially called and he was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation, police said.

He did not sustain any injuries, Zakula said.

Police have had contacts with the man prior to the June 30 incident, he said.

Franks Avenue was closed between Touhy Avenue and Harts Road during the police response. Approximately 20 officers were on the scene once NIPAS was deployed, Zakula said.
