Five people were shot in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side Wednesday afternoon in Chicago’s second mass shooting of the day, officials said.

Three were in critical condition after the latest shooting, police said.

Chicago police and paramedics were called to the intersection of West 79th and South Justine streets about 12:15 p.m., according to a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The shooting happened in front of Justine Food Mart.

According to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman, the victims were standing in a group when a silver sedan pulled up. Three people got out, and all fired shots at the group, she said.

The shooters fled in an unknown direction, Tannehill said. It was unknown if the victims returned fire. No weapons have been recovered, and no one was in custody

The victims were four men and one woman, police said.

According to Tannehill, the victims were:

A 27-year old woman who suffered a graze wound to the hip. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and was in good condition A 47-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the face. He was taken to U. of C. and was in critical condition. A 32-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the lower right back. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was in critical condition. A 50-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his body. He was taken to Christ in critical condition A 36-year-old man who was shot in the left ankle but refused medical assistance at the scene. He later self-reported to Christ in good condition.

It was the second mass shooting of the day in Chicago. About 12 hours earlier, at 12:05 a.m., five people were shot in West Garfield Park. There were no fatalities in that shooting.

According to the CTA, buses were rerouted in the area.

At least 22 yellow evidence markers were placed at the scene. An evidence technician went in and out of the Justine Food Mart multiple times, taking pictures from the inside.

People stopped along the busy street to look and see what happened.

April Lawson was standing at a nearby bus stop when she saw a flurry of police cars rush by.

”I didn’t think it was a shooting,” Lawson said. “I thought maybe it was a car crash.”

Lawson said violence has a ripple effect, noting that when a shooting happens the community as a whole is interrupted. Bus routes are slowed, and businesses are negatively impacted.

“The smallest quality of life stuff,” she said.

She said she is frustrated by the fact that, as she sees it, there are a number of people trying to do the right thing in the community and positive strides are being made, but the violence counteracts any gains.

”Some of us are articulate … intelligent … educated,” she said. " You got all these people, and yet it is still happening.”

Although Lawson has tried her hand at community activism in an effort to stem the violence, she said she is fed up and plans to move to Florida in six months. She said she understands the socioeconomic forces that compel people to commit crimes, and how trauma is deeply embedded into the minds of members of her community.

”It isn’t Chicago in general,” she said. “Just certain neighborhoods and it happens by design.”

But those same complex forces are also what make the problem so hard to solve, she said.

”I don’t know how you shift a consciousness,” she said. “… If you feel hopeless, you don’t feel like you have anything to live for.”
