The Lake County coroner has released the identity of a man who drowned over the weekend in Round Lake.
Following a Monday autopsy, officials identified him as Luis Fernandez Vazquez-Velasquez, 26, of Round Lake. He died Sunday, Coroner Jennifer Banek said.
According to authorities, Vazquez-Velazquez was in a boat when he jumped into the lake to swim at around 8 p.m., but he did not resurface.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police responded to the 900 block of North Lake Shore Drive in Round Lake Park, the fire department said.
When fire and rescue personnel arrived, witnesses on a boat were already performing CPR on Vazquez-Velazquez. He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room, the coroner said.
Preliminary autopsy results were consistent with death by drowning, Banek said, but toxicology results are pending. The incident remains under investigation by police and the coroner’s office.
