One day after the FBI announced a body discovered in Wyoming is believed to be Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito, police in North Port, Florida announced they do not intend to continue an extensive search of the wilderness where person of interest Brian Laundrie may be.

Meanwhile, the FBI executed a search warrant of Laundrie’s parents’ home, where both Petito and Laundrie lived before a summer road trip that ended up with a missing report filed for Petito after Laundrie returned home without her.

Officers served a search warrant, and local media reported that the parents were seen getting into a police van. Video showed at least a dozen law enforcement officers, including one wearing an FBI jacket, pulling up to the house in North Port and rushing inside. Later, a police officer could be seen taking a stack of cardboard boxes inside.

Over the weekend, more than 50 law enforcement officers searched for Laundrie at the more than 24,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, a wildlife area with more than 100 miles of trails, as well as campgrounds.

“At this time, we currently believe we have exhausted all avenues in searching of the grounds there,” North Port police PIO Josh Taylor said in a statement. “Law enforcement agencies continue to search for Brian Laundrie.”

Laundrie, 23, and Petito, 22, who had been living in North Port with Laundrie’s parents, left in July on a cross-country trip in July from their former hometown in Long Island, New York in a Ford Transit van documenting the trip via social media. The childhood sweethearts met while growing up on Long Island. His parents later moved to North Port, about 35 miles south of Sarasota.

A missing persons case was opened on Sept. 11 out of New York after Petito’s family said they had not heard from her since late August. Laundrie had returned to North Port in the van on Sept. 1 without Petito.

Attempts to talk with Laundrie by law enforcement were met by a family lawyer, but last week, Laundrie himself was reported missing, and information from the parents led to the search of Carlton Reserve.

On Sunday, a statement from the North Port Police via Twitter said it was “saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby has been found deceased. Our focus from the start, along with the FBI, and national partners, has been to bring her home. We will continue to work with the FBI in the search for more answers.”

The body in Wyoming was found in an undeveloped camping area on the east side of Grand Teton National Park bordering national forest land after law enforcement searched campgrounds over the weekend.

“Full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found Gabby, but her family has been notified,” FBI Supervisory Special Agent Charles Jones said in a Sunday press conference. “This is an incredibly difficult time for (Petito’s) family and friends.”

The cause of death not yet been determined, Jones said.

An attorney who has been acting as a spokesman for Petito’s family asked in a statement that the family be given room to grieve.

Attorney Richard Benson Stafford indicated that the family would make a public statement at a later date, and he thanked officials with the FBI, Grand Teton Search and Rescue and other agencies that participated in the search for Petito.

“The family and I will be forever grateful,” Stafford said in a statement.
