Authorities said a food delivery driver was fatally shot early Thursday in the Mitchellville area.

       The incident happened around 12:20 a.m. in the 3700 block of Lottsford Vista Road, according to Prince George’s County police.

       The man was identified as Noel Njoku, 48, of Springdale. Njoku was a delivery driver for DoorDash.

       Police said officers responded to the area and found Njoku in a car. He died at a hospital, police said.

       “The preliminary investigation revealed that Njoku was delivering food to a home in the area when he was shot,” police said in a statement. Detectives are trying to determine a motive and a suspect.

       DoorDash released a statement saying they “immediately reached out to law enforcement to offer our assistance in any way we can,” and are in touch with Njoku’s family to extend support.

       “We are deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence and our hearts go out to Mr. Njoku’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.

       A woman who answered the phone at a number that appeared to be associated with Njoku said she did not want to comment.

       There have been 252 homicides in the region this year, according to tracking done by The Washington Post. Of those, 85 have occurred in Prince George’s County.

       As of early August, homicides this year are nearly double what they were at the same time in 2020 and 2019, according to data from the police department.
